K takes to walking in the park after Doctor Henry moves offices. It’s nice to clear his head before he goes back to work, to muse on the day, and the park is nice — there’s a pond with an island in the middle full of little shelters for birds on top of the houses pinned to a lot of the taller trees, and there are swans and ducks and other waterbirds K’s not sure of the name of.
He notices, as part of his routine, his appointment finished at 12:45, that there’s a regular appearance of the same man — he’s about the same age as K, on the skinny side, and is always dressed in business casual clothing. Suit trousers and smart shoes, sometimes even a tie, but then a jumper or a cardigan over his shirt.
He watches the waterbirds. He doesn’t feed them, just sits and placidly watches them, always with his hands…
